So it has been a while since my last update. Just before Ravencon to be exact. Ravencon was fun. The drink off was won by Val. She held off an early push by Davey. The ever fair bartender. Bryan Prindeville felt really bad about how drunk the two of them got. Val was a bit more controlled. Davey, I love him, but he shouldn’t have been drinking that weekend. Some things don’t mix with booze. My cohosts and I won the first ever Ravenconnie for our party at the 2nd ever Ravencon. We won the second as well. I liked the Barfly suite. We are looking into one for next year. Our 2 room thing works well, but that suite was sweet! The weekend’s theme could be the power of three. It was Ravencon number three, I was once again number three. I won three items at Tony Ruggerio’s book launch party. I had 5 tickets… There were three of us in the carpool down. Notice a theme… Not much in the world between then and Balticon which was this past weekend. Balticon involved some table watching, a couple of parties, and a little gaming. Stone Age, a new game, not sure about it yet. Played twice. Second both games. I scored almost twice as high my second game. Two/three parties this year. 1984 went well. “Roll the dice, seal your fate” has such a catchy ring. Led to too much Vodka in my OJ and some pain the next day along with a wek stomach. Of course I now need to sort beads for Worldcon. We’ll need lots of beads that weekend. Cartman was a little slow. Masquerade rehearsal was against it. The switch went to Peggy Rae’s house in 2010 at 8:30 and a good time was had by all. The cake was chocolate heaven. Eva Whitley had an awesome chocolate fountain at her party. I had a pretzel, and ran so I didn’t overdose. Planned to leave at a reasonable hour Sunday night, but gaming lead to an 11:30 departure. Monday was quiet, I read a book. Operation cost savings has been continuing. I have only purchased a few books since my last post. And one of those purchases allowed me to win the prizes at the launch party. Reading list continued: 38) Stonehenge by Bernard Cornwell. This is an historical fiction related to the creation of Stonehenge. The trials and tribulations of the tribes and the priests who envisioned the temple that is/was Stonehenge. Pretty good, Cornwell tried to work in the archeological evidence that was the best guess for how things were moved and erected. 39) Shadow of Saganami by David Weber. This is one of the Honorverse books that doesn’t focus on Honor Harrington. I enjoyed it. It was a pretty standard Honor book, just with very little Honor. 40) Ill Met at the Arena by Dave Duncan. This is a fast paced, fun, one and done. Basically a murder leads a man on a quest for redemption. The world has men with the power of teleportation and telekinesis while the women are telepathic and empathetic and can project illusions. 41) The Wyrmling Horde by David Farland. The latest Runelords book. I still dislike the undead getting rune powers from the living, but good book otherwise. 42) Fort Pillow by Harry Turtledove. Historical fiction following the CSA attack on Fort Pillow By Nathan Bedford Forrest. I hadn’t read too much about this battle before reading this book. Safe to say that I can see how this would be reported quite differently by the North and the South. I agree that the truth was probably somewhere in the middle. 43) Caesar’s Triumph by Steven Saylor. The most recent Gordianus the Finder novel. Caesar is preparing for 4 consecutive triumphs. Someone is out to harm him. But the murder of a friend is what really matters to Gordianus and brings him out of retirement. 44) Time Spike by Eric Flint and Marilyn Kosmatka. This is set in the Assanti shards universe. The same universe that spawned 1632. It is several years after Grantville disappeared. Now a part of Illinois is showing signs of a similar event. Instead of a simple transposition, this time the change radiates. The original area, a maximum security prison, is encased in an expanding circle that draws people and creatures from various times. There are Cherokee, mound builders, De Soto, and dinosaurs all in the same area. The various groups must come together to survive in a new world, okay and old one. 45) Star Wars Invincible (Legacy of the Force book 9) by Troy Denning. This is the final book of the Legacy of the Force series. Star Wars books will continue. But with a few less characters. Pretty good book. Of course who survives the Jaina and Darth Ceadus fight isn’t a surprise. The jokes with every chapter, made me miss the old Jacen.
I don’t think I missed any. I have three Tony Ruggerio books to read, a Resnik book, and my rereads that need to start soon although the next ASOIF book looks like it will be delayed again. |
