It has been a while since I updated. The list continues. It doesn’t look like I will hit 100 for the year… close but no cigar. The read free weeks killed my averages. This year has been unusual in that I don’t often make the whole year without rereading at least a few books.

New PAC forming [Sep. 13th, 2008|12:13 am]
There is a new Political action comittee forming.  Amazing groups that come togethr to have their voices heard.  The new group?  Pitbulls Against Palin.  They firmly beleive that she is giving their bitches a bad name.  My only concern is that when the negative ads start rolling out, we will hear endless GOP complaints about the PAP smear campaign.  Forgive me, but it had to be said...

next post... more on books.  I have been slacking a little but I seem to be picking up the pace again...

Time goes by faster than I realize.  It is almost July and It has been a month since my last update.  Ok, there have been some internet issues interspersed, that may or may not be cleared up now.  We shall see when it rains the next time.

The trip out to Denver will be here before I know it.  2 weeks out of the office will be nice.

46) The Excalibur Alternative by David Weber.  Military Sf.  Related to an earlier short story about a Roman Legion in space.  English Bowman in space.

47) In Fury Born by David Weber.  Another Military SF.  Honor and betrayal are the main ingredients of this tale.

48) The Lord Protector’s Daughter By LE Modesitt Jr.  Reviewed this for SFREVU.  Not available for a couple months.  Part of the Corean Chronicles.

49) The Scourge of God by SM Stirling.  This is the latest book in the Dies the Fire Universe.  The sequel to The Sunrise Lands.  Also a review book.

50) Hell’s Gate by David Weber.  The Weber kick continues.  Multiverse at war.  Magic versus science.

51) Hell Hath No Fury by David Weber.  Second book in the Multiverse war series.  There is one major question developing, ”Are both magic and science going to fail as the respective sides get closer to the home worlds of the other sides.  This seems to be the case, but it is not definitive yet.

And yes I still need to start on Tony’s books… But Asimov’s and F&SF are next on the agenda.

The Power of Three [May. 27th, 2008|08:47 pm]
[Tags|]

So it has been a while since my last update.   Just before Ravencon to be exact.

Ravencon was fun.  The drink off was won by Val.  She held off an early push by Davey.  The ever fair bartender.  Bryan Prindeville felt really bad about how drunk the two of them got.   Val was a bit more controlled.  Davey, I love him, but he shouldn’t have been drinking that weekend.  Some things don’t mix with booze.  My cohosts and I won the first ever Ravenconnie for our party at the 2nd ever Ravencon.  We won the second as well. I liked the Barfly suite.  We are looking into one for next year.  Our 2 room thing works well, but that suite was sweet!  The weekend’s theme could be the power of three.  It was Ravencon number three, I was once again number three.  I won three items at Tony Ruggerio’s book launch party.  I had 5 tickets…  There were three of us in the carpool down.  Notice a theme…

Not much in the world between then and Balticon which was this past weekend.  Balticon involved some table watching, a couple of parties, and a little gaming.  Stone Age, a new game, not sure about it yet.  Played twice.  Second both games.  I scored almost twice as high my second game.  Two/three parties this year.  1984 went well.  “Roll the dice, seal your fate” has such a catchy ring.  Led to too much Vodka in my OJ and some pain the next day along with a wek stomach.  Of course I now need to sort beads for Worldcon.  We’ll need lots of beads that weekend.  Cartman was a little slow.  Masquerade rehearsal was against it.  The switch went to Peggy Rae’s house in 2010 at 8:30 and a good time was had by all.  The cake was chocolate heaven.  Eva Whitley had an awesome chocolate fountain at her party.  I had a pretzel, and ran so I didn’t overdose.  Planned to leave at a reasonable hour Sunday night, but gaming lead to an 11:30 departure.  Monday was quiet, I read a book.

Operation cost savings has been continuing.  I have only purchased a few books since my last post.  And one of those purchases allowed me to win the prizes at the launch party.

Reading list continued:

38) Stonehenge by Bernard Cornwell.  This is an historical fiction related to the creation of Stonehenge.  The trials and tribulations of the tribes and the priests who envisioned the temple that is/was Stonehenge.  Pretty good, Cornwell tried to work in the archeological evidence that was the best guess for how things were moved and erected.

39)  Shadow of Saganami by David Weber.  This is one of the Honorverse books that doesn’t focus on Honor Harrington.  I enjoyed it.  It was a pretty standard Honor book, just with very little Honor.

40)  Ill Met at the Arena by Dave Duncan.  This is a fast paced, fun, one and done.  Basically a murder leads a man on a quest for redemption.  The world has men with the power of teleportation and telekinesis while the women are telepathic and empathetic and can project illusions.

41) The Wyrmling Horde by David Farland.  The latest Runelords book.  I still dislike the undead getting rune powers from the living, but good book otherwise.

42) Fort Pillow by Harry Turtledove.  Historical fiction following the CSA attack on Fort Pillow By Nathan Bedford Forrest.  I hadn’t read too much about this battle before reading this book.  Safe to say that I can see how this would be reported quite differently by the North and the South.  I agree that the truth was probably somewhere in the middle.

43) Caesar’s Triumph by Steven Saylor.  The most recent Gordianus the Finder novel.  Caesar is preparing for 4 consecutive triumphs.  Someone is out to harm him.  But the murder of a friend is what really matters to Gordianus and brings him out of retirement.

44) Time Spike by Eric Flint and Marilyn Kosmatka.  This is set in the Assanti shards universe.  The same universe that spawned 1632.  It is several years after Grantville disappeared.  Now a part of Illinois is showing signs of a similar event.  Instead of a simple transposition, this time the change radiates.  The original area, a maximum security prison, is encased in an expanding circle that draws people and creatures from various times.  There are Cherokee, mound builders, De Soto, and dinosaurs all in the same area.  The various groups must come together to survive in a new world, okay and old one.

45) Star Wars Invincible (Legacy of the Force book 9) by Troy Denning.  This is the final book of the Legacy of the Force series.  Star Wars books will continue.  But with a few less characters.  Pretty good book.  Of course who survives the Jaina and Darth Ceadus fight isn’t a surprise.  The jokes with every chapter, made me miss the old Jacen.

I don’t think I missed any.  I have three Tony Ruggerio books to read, a Resnik book, and my rereads that need to start soon although the next ASOIF book looks like it will be delayed again.

Ravencon [Apr. 25th, 2008|10:19 am]
Will be leaving soon.  Just waiting for Sarah to get here.  Should be an interesting weekend.  Too bad my refinance got pushed back to next week.

35) Copperhead by Bernard Cornwell
36) Battleflag by Bernard Cornwell
37) Valiant by Jack Campbell. This is a prerelease, I still need to write the review.  But it definitely keeps up the pace and is a great addition to the series.

I have to figure out if I am going to read The one percent doctrine by Ron Suskind now or wait a while.  I do have a book added to my library queue, but it hasn't come in yet.

Spring flu [Apr. 14th, 2008|05:37 pm]

Well I may be sick.  Not sure yet.  My throat is a little scratchy.  Hopefully it won't hit full force.

On the reading front:
30) Rebel by Bernard Cornwell
31) Jade Empire by Naomi Novik
32) Gunpowder War  by Naomi Novik
33) Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik
34) Valley-Westside War By Harry Turtledove Crosstime Traffic #6

Next Month I expect to start rereading George RR Martins ASOIF series.  I will probably break in the reread of Harry Turtledove's Krispos Trilogy.  I haven't reread them in a while.

I also need to find some of the later earlier books from the Wilodcards series.  I may also start getting the Dabel brother's graphic novelizations of the Wildcards.

Technicon [Apr. 2nd, 2008|08:20 pm]
[Tags|]

I was at Technicon this past weekend.   George RR Martin was the GOH.  Very good guest.  It was nice to chat with him and interesting to chat with a few members of the Brotherhood without Banners.  The con was on the VT campus in Blacksburg VA.  The hotel was a few miles away.  The con had about 400 members which is a record for the con.  Didn't seem that big.  It was a big change from my prior cons.  Fewer authors and panels.  Drive wasn't bad.  Heavy truck traffic.  I also need to start rereading the Song of Ice and Fire books in preparation for Dance with Dragons out maybe later this year.

On the reading front:
28) Into the Storm (Destroyermen book 1) by Taylor Anderson

And I need to finish Asimov's for Friday.

catch up. [Mar. 31st, 2008|04:50 pm]
[Tags|]

So Datclave happened and I never got around to completing the post.  I had written about it but my computer killed my entry and I couldn't get it back.  It was fun there were 40+ people there.  Nice to meet some of the people.  Good to hang with friends.  The battlefeild tour by Bob and Lee's tours was fun but COLD.  This led to a skipping of a few less critical stops on the tour.  Peggy Rae's house in 2010 went well... 20 presupporting members now have their t-shirts.

On the reading front...

19) Luna Marine (The Heritage Trilogy, Book 2) by Ian Douglas
20) Europa Strike: (The Heritage Trilogy, Book 3) by Ian Douglas
21) Star Strike (The Inheritance Trilogy, Book 1) by Ian Douglas
22) Battlespace (The Legacy Trilogy, Book 2) by Ian Douglas
23) Star Marines (The Legacy Trilogy, Book 3) by Ian Douglas
24) Star Corps (The Legacy Trilogy, Book 1) by Ian Douglas
25) Mage Guard of Hamor by L.E. Modesitt Jr.
26) The Summer Palace by Lawrence Watt-Evans
27) Off Armageddon Reef by David Weber

I may have missed some.  I will check again.

I watched the ending of 3:10 to Yuma the original this morning.  It was quite different from the Christian Bale and Russel Crowe version.  I was surprised at who survived and who died.

On the reading front.

18) Semper Mars by Ian Douglas
